The gel dries to a matte finish with the characteristic appearance and tactile quality of beach sand, producing an opaque to semi-opaque surface that becomes increasingly opaque with thicker application. The medium is certified non-toxic by the Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI), highly flexible, adhesive, and formulated to be lightfast, permanent and non-yellowing, ensuring archival quality results for long-term studio practice.

The natural sand particles embedded in the gel create a surface with genuine tooth and grip, making this medium an excellent ground for a wide range of drawing and painting media. Liquitex Natural Sand Textured Effects Medium can be applied directly from the jar using a palette knife, brush, trowel or comb. Apply thickly for bold sculptural, three-dimensional sandy effects, or thinly as a textured ground to be overpainted once fully dry. For uniform ridges and surface patterning, draw a ridged trowel or comb across the wet surface before drying.

The medium can be mixed with Liquitex acrylic colour before application, or used on its own and overpainted with acrylics, oils, pastels or graphite once dry. Mix with Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish to create textured glazes. It can be applied to canvas, paper, wood, board and any surface that accepts traditional acrylic media. If varnishing finished work, spray varnish is recommended to avoid foaming or clouding over the textured surface.
