Reeves Iridescent Medium is a 200mL acrylic effects medium that imparts a beautiful pearlescent, shimmering quality to acrylic paint and painted surfaces. When mixed with acrylic colour, the medium transforms ordinary paint into a luminous, light-shifting finish that catches and reflects light with a gentle iridescent glow. When brushed over dry paint as a finishing layer, it adds a translucent shimmer that brings depth, movement and visual richness to the surface beneath. The convenient tube format makes dispensing and application easy and controlled.
The iridescent effect is produced by light-reflecting particles suspended throughout the medium, which interact with light at different angles to create the characteristic colour-shifting quality of pearlescent finishes. The effect is most pronounced when applied over or mixed with mid to deep toned colours, where the contrast between the underlying colour and the pearlescent layer creates a striking visual depth. Over lighter colours and whites, the medium produces a more subtle, soft-sheen quality.
Students can use Reeves Iridescent Medium to explore the expressive and material qualities of light, surface and finish in their studio practice. The medium is particularly effective for abstract, decorative and experimental works where surface luminosity and visual interest are central to the artistic intent. It opens up exploration of concepts including light, reflection, translucency and material transformation that are highly relevant to senior visual arts study and practice.
The medium is compatible with all acrylic paints and can be applied to any acrylic-friendly surface including canvas, board, paper and wood. As an effects medium, it can be used alone as a translucent glaze layer or combined in custom ratios with acrylic colour and other Reeves mediums to create unique surface qualities and finishes tailored to each artist's needs.
Suitable for secondary and senior art students, visual arts HSC programs and experimental studio practice, Reeves Iridescent Medium is an accessible and affordable effects medium that adds a distinctive and beautiful luminosity to acrylic painting work.
Reeves Iridescent Medium can be applied in two ways. To mix with paint, squeeze the desired amount of medium into acrylic colour and combine thoroughly before applying to the surface with a brush or palette knife. To apply as a finishing layer, brush the medium directly over fully dried acrylic paint to add an iridescent sheen across the completed work.
The medium can be applied in thin, even layers for a subtle pearlescent finish, or built up in thicker applications for a more pronounced iridescent effect. It is compatible with all acrylic-friendly surfaces and can be combined with other Reeves acrylic mediums for custom effects and finishes.
